Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) is a typical n-type transition metal oxide semiconductor with a band gap of 3.4-5.3 EV, a melting point of 1485 ℃± 5 ℃ and a relative density of 4.47g/cm3. Niobium pentoxide has high chemical stability, insoluble in water and acid (except sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid), and soluble in molten alkali metal, carbonate and hydroxide. Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) is a kind of oxide with many forms. The transformation of each form is controlled and influenced by the raw material, pressure and temperature. There are nearly ten common crystal structures of Nb2O5: monoclinic: B, h, N, R and Z; tetragonal: P and m; orthorhombic: T; hexagonal: TT. The detailed parameter values of different lattice structures of Nb2O5 are listed in Table 1.1. According to the different lattice structure of niobium pentoxide at different synthesis temperature, niobium pentoxide can be classified and summarized by low temperature, medium temperature and high temperature: t-nb2o5 and tt-nb2o5 are low temperature structural phases sintered at 700-900k; b-nb2o5, n-nb2o5, r-nb2o5, p-nb2o5 and m-nb2o5 are low temperature structural phases sintered at 900-1200k The results show that h-nb2o5 is a high-temperature structural phase synthesized at a temperature above 1220k.

 

Niobium pentoxide is mainly used in ceramics, electronic ceramics, optical glass, glass coating, liquid crystal display, energy and other industries. In recent years, with the rapid development of glass coating, liquid crystal display and other industries, the demand for niobium pentoxide targets, especially high-quality niobium pentoxide targets, is increasing. In general, for high-quality target materials, one is to have high density (> 99.5%) and high purity (> 99.99%); the other is to have good microstructure, that is, the particle size of target crystal is micron scale and evenly distributed. In addition, niobium pentoxide target also needs to have good mechanical properties.

Niobium pentoxide is used as nickel niobate single crystal for special optical glass, high and low frequency capacitors and piezoelectric ceramic components. It is also used to produce various niobium alloys for ferroniobium and special steels. It is a raw material for preparing niobium and its compounds. It is also used as catalyst and refractory.

Method

Roasting method: the niobium material or crude niobium pentoxide is dissolved by nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid to form niobium fluoride. Niobium is extracted by organic phase mixture of strong acid and methyl isobutyl ketone. After stripping, the niobium hydroxide precipitate is formed by the reaction of ammonia water and niobium fluoride acid. After washing, drying and burning, refined niobium pentoxide can be obtained.
